Zoom in on sea moss gummies! What are they? Are they really that healthy? What benefits can you expect? How to make your own seaweed gummies at home?

What is sea moss?

First things first, let’s talk about sea moss. Scientifically known as Chondrus crispusand commonly called Irish moss or Jamaican moss, sea moss is a seaweed that grows on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. The alga may have different colors and shades depending on its origin and the types and amounts of minerals it contains. While it's generally gold, purple, or green, you can come across red, black, yellow, or pink sea moss.

Minerals aren't here just for the color. They're precisely what makes sea moss unique and sought-after in the health and wellness industry. Chondrus crispus is indeed one of the richest natural ingredients. Rumor has it that it contains up to 92 of the 102 minerals and vitamins our body needs to function!

That makes it a fantastic superfood with loads of benefits for health. While it’s still relatively new for Americans, the Irish and Caribbean people have used sea moss for centuries to prevent and treat numerous health conditions.

Gummies vs. gel, capsules, or raw sea moss?

There are several ways to eat sea moss, including raw, in gel, powder, capsules, or gummies.

Eating raw sea moss is the purest and most natural way to reap its benefits. However, raw sea moss has an ocean-like taste that many find unpleasant, whether fresh or dried.

Raw dried sea moss

Organics Nature’s raw sea moss is wildcrafted in Saint Lucia.

The most common alternative then is to use sea moss gel. It’s made with 100% Chondrus crispus that has been soaked in water and blended until it becomes a gelatinous substance. Sea moss gel has the main advantage of being very easy to incorporate into any food or drink.

Use Organics Nature Premium Sea Moss Gel to make your sea moss gummies at home.

Some people prefer taking sea moss powder or capsules from dehydrated sea moss algae. The powder can conveniently be added to your recipes or sprinkled on top of your food. Pills are extremely convenient because they’re precisely dosed out, so you know the exact amount of sea moss you’re taking.

Each of Organics Nature’s Sea Moss Capsules contains 500mg of sea moss powder enriched with bladderwrack and burdock root.

Although less common than gel or capsules, gummy bears are a great way to add sea moss gel to your daily routine. Like capsules, store-bought sea moss gummies have the advantage of being dosed out to the milligram. Besides, they allow for a wider variety of flavors and colors. They’re also ultraconvenient and ridiculously easy to make at home!

Are sea moss gummies effective?

Sea moss gummies are just as effective as any other form of sea moss. They’re made with pure sea moss gel, to which we add Agar Agar (vegan gelatin) and fruit juices for the flavor of your choice! In the process, the sea moss gel does not deteriorate and keeps all its nutrients and natural properties.

Sea Moss Gummies Benefits & Risks

Sea moss gummies or edibles have the same health benefits as sea moss in general. Because they’re made with pure sea moss gel, you can reap the same benefits from gummies as gel, capsules, or even raw sea moss.

Gummies made with sea moss are loaded with essential minerals and vitamins your body needs to function every day. They make excellent daily supplements to:

On top of that, sea moss is also believed to help prevent and treat severe health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, respiratory disorders, and even some cancers.

A healthy alternative to conventional candies

If you or your kids have a sweet tooth and enjoy candies, sea moss gummies make a much healthier alternative to conventional ones. But, unfortunately, candies don't have any nutritional benefits apart from being yummy. Quite the opposite, most gummies are full of refined sugars and harmful junk.

Sea moss gummies are packed with healthy nutrients, providing tons of minerals and vitamins. That's even better when they're homemade, and you control what ingredients are inside (no chemicals, hidden gelatins, added sugars, artificial flavors, or preservatives). They’re also vegan and gluten-free.

Side effects

Chondrus crispus is a safe, natural ingredient with very few side effects and risks for health. But it's potent, and too much of it could be harmful, mainly because of its high iodine content.

Iodine is an essential mineral that the body can’t produce on its own, so it needs to be food-brought. That’s why most of the salt you buy in the US is iodized! The health authorities add iodine to our salt to ensure the population gets enough of it.But too much iodine can cause significant damage to our health. That being said, you would need to ingest enormous amounts of sea moss daily to get poisoned by iodine.

Poor-quality sea moss may also contain high levels of heavy metals if grown in polluted waters. Heavy metals are dangerous for the health, especially for pregnant women. Only buy sea moss that has been tested for heavy metals.

Sea moss may also cause mild side effects like bowel disturbances, allergies, or others.

How many sea moss gummies can you take?

It depends on how they’re dosed out. The recommended dosage is one to two tablespoons of sea moss gel per day. You can have sea moss gummies daily, but always stick to the recommended dosage and don’t exceed the safe daily sea moss gel intake.

Most store-bought sea moss gummies contain between 500 mg and 2000 mg of sea moss per serving (generally 2 or 3 gummies), but check the serving size before use.

How to Make Sea Moss Gummies?

While you can get store-bought sea moss gummies, we highly encourage you to make your own ones at home. That's the only way to ensure they're 100% natural and don't contain too much sugar or artificial junk. Here are two great easy-to-make sea moss gummies recipes:

Recipe 1: Pineapple sea moss gummies

Pineapple to make sea moss flavoured gummies

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml pineapple juice
  • 3 tbsp Organics Nature Dr. Sebi-inspired sea moss gel
  • 2 tbsp agar-agar powder
  • 1-2 tbsp agave nectar, honey, maple syrup, or coconut nectar (adjust depending on how sweet you like your gummies)
  • Optional: you can add 2 teaspoons of ginger, cinnamon, or other spice powders to enhance the taste and benefits

Instructions

  1. Mix the pineapple juice, the agar agar powder, and the spices in a small saucepan.
  1. In a bowl aside, mix the sea moss gel and the agave nectar (or another sweetener) and whisk until evenly combined.
  1. Place the saucepan on the stove and reduce the heat just before it starts boiling.
  1. Pour the sea moss gel and agave mixture into the saucepan. Keep whisking until the sea moss gel dissolves entirely for about 2-3 minutes. Do not boil.
  1. When the mixture starts to thicken, take the saucepan out of the stove and quickly pour it into the gummies mold with a teaspoon.
  1. Place the mold in your fridge for about one hour until the gummies are firm.
  1. Keep the gummies refrigerated and eat them within five days.

You can easily change the flavor of these sea moss gummies by substituting the pineapple juice with any of your favorite juices (apple, orange, berries, etc.).

Recipe 2: Sea moss & elderberry gummies

Elderberry juice for homemade gummies

Sea moss and elderberry work great in synergy. Sea moss and elderberry gummies allow for reaping even more health benefits from nature by combining sea moss’s minerals with elderberry’s vitamin C and antioxidants. A potent immune-boosting recipe!

To make sea moss and elderberry gummies, follow the instructions from the recipe above, but substitute the pineapple juice with elderberry juice and the pure sea moss gel with an elderberry-infused one.

Dear Cindy,
We recommend taking 2 sea moss gummies a day from our brand. If you’re taking homemade gummies or gummies from other brands, it would depend on their respective dosage.

How many gummies would you eat a day?

Cindy

Hi Scottie,
Are you referring to making sea moss gel? In that case, the best is to let the sea moss soak in water for about 12 hours. 4 days would be too long, it may spoil.
